Description

This synagogue in Europe, completed in 1675, stands out for its impressive wooden barrel-vaulted ceilings and holds the title of the largest synagogue in Europe. Still in use today, its services are illuminated by the candlelight of the large chandeliers in the absence of electric lighting. The entrance also leads to the treasure chambers where 16th century manuscripts and gold-threaded tapestries are kept on display. Furthermore, Ets Haim seminary located nearby is home to one of the oldest and most important Jewish book collections in Europe.
