Description

Hendrick de Keyser's remarkably modern design for the Noorderkerk, located at the northern end of Prinsengracht, was completed in 1623. This Calvinist church was built with a broad Greek cross shape, featuring four arms of equal length and a central pulpit, so that the entire congregation could have an unobstructed view. This distinct style was unique at the time, but it eventually became widespread among Protestant churches across the Netherlands. The Noorderkerk also hosts the celebrated Noorderkerkconcerten concert series, which takes place on Saturday afternoons. Conveniently, this church is situated close to Westerkerk, which is known for servicing the upper classes.
