Description

Showcasing the life of a famous Dutch poet

The Bilderdijk Museum is located in south Amsterdam. It is entirely dedicated to the life and works of Willem Bilderdijk. On display are translations of classics, plays and patriotic poems for which he is famous. His life is documented through a collection of drawings, engravings, and curios.

A man of strong Calvinistic convictions, Bilderdijk was the founder of the spiritual movement Het Reveil. He tried to give Christian answers to the ideals of the French Revolution. The Bilderdijk Museum shows that Willem led a vigorous campaign against liberal ideas. One of his devoted followers Isaac da Costa deemed him anti-revolutionary.
