Description

A significant architectural building and historical site

Athenaeum Illustre was erected in the 14th century. This edifice was the foundation for Agnietenkapel, the beginning of the University of Amsterdam. The words "Athenaeum Illustre," meaning the illustrious Athenaeum, can be seen on the gate of the Agnietenkapel at Oudezijds Voorburgwal 231.

At first only History and Philosophy were taught. Then in the 17th century Law, Medicine and Theology were added. Athenaeum Illustre grew and went through many changes and name changes until 1961 when it became the University of Amsterdam.
